The Saratoga County Cadet Program is designed to provide exciting and challenging training along with on-the-job experience for young people interested in a career in law enforcement. The cadets participate in many phases of police work and training, but are not placed in dangerous law enforcement situations. The Saratoga County Cadet Program is one of the best ways for youth to become involved with their community in a positive way and learn about law enforcement at the same time!

Cadets are trained in many different areas of police work. They receive an overview of areas such as:

• Traffic Control
• Radio Procedures
• Collision Reconstruction
• First Aid
• Traffic Laws
• Criminal Laws
• Crime Prevention
• General Police Procedures
• Physical Conditioning

To become a Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office Cadet, you must meet the following requirements:

• Be between the ages of 14 and 20 (must have completed the 8th grade)
• Maintain at least a “C” average in all schoolwork through the 12th grade
• Have no serious arrests or convictions
• Maintain good moral character
• Pass a background investigation
• Demonstrate willingness to serve your community and participate in cadet activities
  

Project Lifesaver is a program that helps locate individuals who are at risk of wandering. This includes individuals with autism, Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s. Families are issued a radio frequency transmitter that is typically warn on the wrist or ankle. In the event the individual wanders, the Sheriff’s Office would respond to the scene with a receiver designed to locate the transmitter. The transmitters are waterproof with a 60-day battery life, requiring little maintenance for families. In addition, basic client information including a picture will be stored at the Sheriff’s Office for quick access by the 911 communication center, in the event of an emergency.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Opioid Overdose Prevention program is registered with the New York State Department of Health and is authorized to train and dispense naloxone to civilians on-the-spot. Its Second Chance program follows up with the victims of all overdoses, regardless of the substance involved, with the goal of engaging them in community recovery services. It has received national acclaim and has been recognized as a groundbreaking model that has helped many suffering with substance use disorders on their path to recovery.

The Sheriff’s Office’s School Resource Officer program began in 2018. Since that date, the program has continued to grow and now includes 16 school resource officers across 12 school districts. School resource officers play an important role in the safety and security of our schools, build relationships with our youth and provide training and education to staff and students. All school resource officers are full time deputy sheriffs and are employed by the Sheriff’s Office.
